Anyone who has met Miss Sofia will remember not only her gorgeous smile but her bright and fun personality. Miss Sofia was the first instructor I had for lyra and made class so much fun, instantly making everyone feel relaxed and welcome. A dancer all her life, Sofia's incredible dance prowess combined with her warm personality and sense of humour makes her one of our favourite instructors to welcome new students to the studio! This week we get up close and personal with this goddess of pole and lyra and find out what makes her tick!

How long have you been dancing?
I have been dancing all my life in one form or another... I started out ballet when I was 4 and continued adding more and more styles to my repertoire as I got older. When I was 15 I was doing eight hours a week of dance classes which included ballet, hip hop, contemporary and jazz. Unfortunately due to the HSC it wasn't sustainable and I quit dancing to focus on school work.  It wasn't until I was 17 that I found my love for Pole. About 6 months after starting pole I was obsessed and started doing silks and lyra, and I even tried a class of trapeze! (it was not my cup of tea).

How long have you been teaching at Sky Sirens and which styles do you teach?
I have been teaching at  Sky Sirens since the first full term it opened. I signed up for the first ever mini term as a student, and when Katia recognised my talent she asked me to join the team! I have been loving every minute of it ever since!!

How would you describe your dance style?
That's a hard question. I think my style adapts to my mood, the music, and the apparatus or medium I'm using. However, what never changes is my goal to express or tell a story through my moves; sometimes that means an edgier, stronger routine full of hard tricks and hit accents (like my recent night cap performance) other times it is getting back to the basics for a more feminine and flowy routine (like the Emeralds routine to 'Lies in the Dark', one of my favourites, see the video below!). When I listen to a song I sometimes get an idea of a character of message that I want portray. I want to audience to go on a journey, whether it's feeling what I feel or feeling for me, my aim is to leave people wanting more.

What advice to you like to give to your students?
I have many speeches and rants for my students about lessons I have learnt while doing aerial, and there have been so many lessons learnt. Probably the most important is that the easiest way is not necessarily the shortest. By that I mean it may seem easy to cheat or skip a move at the time in order to move onto something newer/easier/more exciting, however a lot of the time it comes round to bite you on that cute behind you have! I myself relied heavily on my flexible in my inverts and threw myself into them instead of using control and muscle. It was fine... until I started doing them up the pole, at which point I had to go right back to the beginning and learn all over again, and break some very stubborn habits! I have found this also applies to my muggle life. Learn from my mistakes!

What do you do when you’re not being a Siren?
Haha, what don't I do! When I am not all glammed up and teaching people to fly I am at University studying a Bachelor of Human Sciences and Psychology. I also have another job as a disability care worker, so I don't have a whole lot of free time these days, but I wouldn't change it for a second! Sky Sirens is my escape where I get to relax, share my empowerment and knowledge and hang out with so many AMAZING ladies!

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
EVERYWHERE! I want to travel the world and experience it all, but for now I will start with Europe. I have never been, and while it might sound odd I really want to go to Scotland. It's where my other is from and I have heard so many stories that I would like to experience it for myself. And then Paris!

What does this term hold for you?
As well as Big Bad Booty I am teaching Babydoll and Pearls Lyra, and Babydoll and Pearls Pole.
