Meet Miss Annie Sky, a 24 year old Veterinary Nurse by day and budding Burlesque beauty by night. This pink haired pinup talks about bullying and how dancing encourages her to be comfortable in her own skin.
How long have you been dancing Burlesque, Pole and Lyra?
I have been dancing Burlesque for 8 months, Pole for 6 months and Lyra for 2 months.
Did you feel nervous before your first lesson?
The first lesson I did at Sky Sirens I was extremely nervous. I started at the studio doing burlesque and it was something that was completely out of my comfort zone. I felt really awkward and uncoordinated but that all changed after the first few lessons. With Pole and Lyra I was really worried that I wouldn’t have the strength to do a lot of the moves and tricks but the amazing fun I was having overpowered the nerves.
What obstacles have you faced as a victim of bullying? How has this impacted on your self-love and body image?
I’ve grown a lot over the last several months when it comes to my body image and Self-Love. I have anxiety and having been a 'non-girly' and bigger girl, I was bullied through most of school. It did affect how I saw myself. I never really thought I was smart, pretty or skinny enough etc. I’ve struggled a lot with being comfortable within my own skin. It’s really since I left school and particularly over the last 8-12 months that it’s started to change and accept myself and my body through becoming more comfortable on my own skin.
How does dancing Burlesque, Pole and Lyra make you feel?
Burlesques, Pole and Lyra have mad me feel amazing. I feel so much more confident and empowered as a woman. It’s given me a chance become a better version of myself.
What do you enjoy most about coming to class?
Aside from the classes themselves, I enjoy the people and the atmosphere of the Sky Sirens. The teachers are amazing, they are always super supportive and are always willing to help and chat. The students are really friendly and always nice.
How would you define Self-Love?
Self-Love is being comfortable with yourself and who you are. It’s being able to embrace who you are and your difference to others.
What is your most beautiful physical feature, and why?
I would have to say my eyes. I have been told they are very expressive.
What advice would you give a Burlesque, Pole or Lyra virgin who was nervous about signing up?
Bite the bullet and give it a go. It’s incredibly rewarding seeing the progress you make. It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made. You will have fun and meet some amazing new people.
