Introducing the beautiful Lauren, a 26 year old Journalist based in Sydney. This voluptuous vixen talks about being queer, the relationship with her body and how Lyra makes her feel full of life.
How long have you been dancing Burlesque and Lyra?
I have been dancing "Showgirl Lyra", a unique class that blends Lyra and Burlesque for two months.
Did you feel nervous before your first lesson?
I felt quite nervous before my first lesson as I was so scared that I wouldn't be able to do any of the moves and would look like an idiot compared to the other girls. I wasn't sure what to think, but from the second I walked into the parlour I felt comfortable.
What obstacles have you faced as a voluptuous, queer woman? How has this impacted on your self-love and body image?
As someone who is queer, plus size and has suffered from depression since I was a teenager, my relationship with my body and Self-Love has always been rocky. I've looked at myself before and felt like I'm not good enough, that I'll never be loved because of my appearance and that I'm not good enough. I've thought that I don't look 'queer enough' and worried that I don't fit into the LGBTI community because I'm femme but voluptuous.
How does dancing Showgirl Lyra make you feel?
Doing Showgirl Lyra has improved my relationship with my body so much. I realise that my body is beautiful no matter what my size and that it can do incredible things. Lyra makes me feel strong and beautiful, like a badass queen who can conquer the world. When I started Lyra, I was at a low point in my life, struggling with depression, a recent break up and a job that didn't make me happy. Lyra became something I looked forward to. I gained so much confidence and love for myself. After the term ended, I had quit my job, started dating again and felt so full of life - all in part because of my newly gained confidence.
What do you enjoy most about coming to class?
The thing I enjoy most about coming to class is the incredibly supportive environment. Both the instructors and the other students are incredible, encouraging and knowledgeable. It's a happy place in my week and when it's time to go home I am filled with laughter and love (as well as some sore muscles!)
How would you define Self-Love?
Self love is appreciating your mind and body, as they are unique to you. It's about looking at yourself in the mirror and seeing your body for the incredible thing it is, putting your hands over it and knowing you are enough.
What is your most beautiful physical feature, and why?
My smile, because I use it so much now. But I also have so much love for my "thunder thighs" which are incredibly strong and capable.
What advice would you give a Burlesque or Lyra virgin who was nervous about signing up?
Your body can do incredible things, and Sky Sirens is the most supportive and wonderful place I have ever encountered.
