It's getting a little hot in here as we introduce Joshua James, a 23 year old Auditor by day and Burlesque performer at night. This Cabaret Queen gives insight on learning Lyra and how Burlesque makes him feel.
How long have you been performing Cabaret, Burlesque and Lyra?
I worked professionally in music theatre from 2012 and I've been in the cabaret scene since then. I've been booking burlesque constantly for almost a year. I'm only 2 months into Lyra and loving it!
Did you feel nervous before your first lesson?
Yes! But I try to never let it show! My biggest worries were that I wouldn't be strong or flexible enough!
What obstacles have you faced as a result of being queer? How has this impacted on your self-love and body image?
It's hard being a gay man in the sydney community. There is a strong sense of the "better the body, the better the guy" and there is an insane focus on having the best body you can. It can make socialising pretty scary, as you always feel you aren't good enough to be friends with this guy, or to hookup with that guy.
How does Dancing on the Lyra make you feel?
Physically and mentally great! I feel so confident, free and unique when I'm in the Lyra and performing Burlesque. It's also helping me reach my body image goals in a safe and fun way!
What do you enjoy most about coming to class?
Trying the new combinations each week and seeing it all piece together as we learn the routine! I also like the classes where I really see improvement in technique and strength! The feeling of accomplishment is indescribable!
How would you define Self-Love?
Acceptance and happiness within yourself; inside your head and your physical body.
What is your most beautiful physical feature, and why?
I'm torn between my blue eyes, because who doesn't love a pair of baby blues! Or my bubble butt...because I like the attention I get from it!
What advice would you give a Lyra virgin who was nervous about signing up?
It's okay to be nervous! I've been performing since I was six and I still get nervous! Sky Sirens is such a safe place with no judgement! The girls will welcome you with open hearts!
